Early mornings, multi-tasking and designing THE cutest accessory for your baby…Designer Catriona Alfaham shares her schedule with us.
6:00 A.M. Having a 7-month old baby, Cleo who wakes up with the lark, I am normally awake around 6am. The first thing I do is to change her nappy swiftly followed by a strong coffee for mama!
7:00 A.M. I love breakfast and often have anything from a nice protein packed smoothie and porridge with almond milk to cereal or toast to keep me fuelled up until lunchtime.
8:25 A.M. Every morning I walk my 3-year old, Layla to pre-school, which is luckily situated not far from our home. I walk home through our local park, which helps my baby to nod off for her first nap of the day. This is important as it is whilst she is sleeping I can check my emails and make a to do list for the day once I get home.
11:30 A.M. I walk to collect Layla from pre-school before heading home for lunch, which can be anything from soup to a sandwich or pasta – Layla’s favourite! Layla has two days a week with her Nanny, my mother in law, which allows me to take Cleo with me to the office. On these days, whilst I focus on getting orders sent out and getting stuck into my to do list, she plays happily in her playpen. Designing and planning the photo shoots are my favourite jobs and take up a significant amount of my time; each collection is designed a year in advance and when the photography is finished I design the look book to send to buyers. I also make sure I do a weekly stock take to ensure I have enough packaging and other items that are needed to fulfil orders. Really, I organise my day by what is a priority. It constantly feels like a juggle and often my to do list grows rather than shrinks but I think this is just what it is like when you have your own business. On the other three remaining weekdays I tend to take Layla and Cleo out somewhere, either to the park or to the swimming pool, depending on the weather.
4:30 P.M. I normally finish up around 4.30 so I can return home to prepare tea for the kids before bath time and getting them ready for bed. When they are safely tucked up in bed I can return to my laptop to work for another couple of hours before I retire to bed.
7:00 P.M. My evenings are either spent working, such as contacting buyers to see if they would like to stock our range, contacting trade press to promote the collection and constantly updating my website. However, sometimes I like to go to an exercise class, like yoga or pilates to unwind.
10:00 P.M. As a working mama and with a baby who still doesn’t sleep through the night I tend to go to bed rather early. I often feel so shattered that I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow!
