Designing, networking and champagne with the girls…The designer shares her schedule with us.

Natalie Kalkowski, Apparella

8:00 A.M.

On waking up I answer some emails and check on the days schedule, always with a cup of earl grey tea in hand! During the week I often skip breakfast but choose to drink lots of water or tea until it’s time for lunch. My daily routine varies as I work from home, where my showroom is located. I am often changing locations during the day; from client visits in my showroom, meetings around town to dropping by my manufacturer who is based in Singapore and visiting current pop ups at department stores like Isetan and boutiques like Society A. This is the time of the day where I cover any deadlines or fires that need putting out. By putting the most important and urgent things first, I find I can have a more relaxed day later on.

12:00 P.M.

No breakfast means an early lunch, mostly around noon. If I am not meeting with business partners then lunch is the time of the day where I love to catch up with my close friends. Lunch can be anything from a healthy salad to a naughty Big Mac depending on how I feel. I like variety across the week.

1:00 P.M

If I managed to finish the stressful tasks earlier, the afternoon time means I can focus on the more creative side of the business like coming up with new ideas for Apparella, looking for design inspiration and planning photo shoots. Sometimes I will treat myself and take an hour to go for a manicure or a massage to have a balanced day.

6:30 P.M.

Time for me to put the business aside and meet my girls for a quick glass of champagne at one of the Emerald Hill Cafés. It’s great to reflect on the day/week passed and just do girl talk! On other days, after work calls for me to attend fashion and lifestyle events and it’s time to network.

8:00 P.M.

On a typical evening I will go for a nice quiet dinner with my boyfriend or we cook together at home. Lately, there has been lots of food delivery in our lives, which I am secretly trying to get away from. Cooking for yourself is so much nicer!

11:00 P.M.

Sometimes when I am ready for bed, I find myself having to start work again because something urgent has come in that I have to finish right away. So I find it’s sometimes better for me to not check my emails late in the evening! Mostly I go to bed around 11/12am feeling balanced and curious for what awaits me the next day and excited about how I can grow my company every new day.
